Harry Potter on Alexa: 19 Enchanting Features [2021]

Harry Potter Easter Eggs & Skills Text on Harry Potter Characters Background

Updated: July 29, 2021

There’s something special about the Harry Potter books.

That’s easy to see.  After all, they’re the best-selling books of all time (outside of the Bible).

I myself became a big Harry Potter fan, right around the peak of the mania in the late 1990’s.

And as it turned out, researching / writing this guide was a wonderful and nostalgic trip back in time to the magic of those books.  In fact, I’m thankful to you (our readers) for giving me the reason to do it!

So I hope that these Harry Potter Alexa surprises help to repay that!

Let’s dive apparate in.

The 3 Ways To Enjoy Harry Potter With Alexa

Alexa has more Harry Potter entertainment for you than you might have imagined.  And it comes in three varieties, which we’ll go through individually in the following sections:

1. Audiobooks: You can listen to any of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books on Alexa (via Audible), including ones read by the cast of the movies!

2. Easter eggs:  Through a lot of trial and error, fans have uncovered 12 Harry Potter Easter eggs for you to try out with Alexa.

3. Alexa Skills:  Alexa has an array of Harry Potter-related skills you can enable, from trivia to jokes and more.

Which Alexa Device Do I Need?

It’s most common to use Alexa on Amazon Echo smart speakers (like the Echo Dot or Echo Show), but any Alexa-enabled device will do.

This could be your smartphone (via the Amazon Alexa app) or even a third-party product with Alexa built-in (for example, the Bose QC 35 II headphones or a recent Vizio TV).

The Harry Potter Audiobooks

Audible has all seven of the original Harry Potter books in its collection (as well as many of J.K. Rowling’s ancillary novels).

Recently, Audible even gave away J.K. Rowling’s newest book, Tales of Beedle the Bard, for free to Audible Plus members

The audiobook has been a hit, given that it’s narrated by the cast of the Harry Potter movies and plays!  Specifically:

Phone on top of book with Audible playing
  • Jude Law (Albus Dumbledore from the Fantastic Beasts films)
  • Warwick Davis (Professor Flitwick)
  • Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood)
  • Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy)
  • Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley)

Harry Potter Easter Eggs

So far, Harry Potter fandom has discovered 12 Easter eggs.  These are listed below and organized into two categories:

  1. Harry Potter Spells
  2. Harry Potter Quotes & Questions

An Easter egg is a feature, message, or inside joke that creators often hide within movies, video games, and other media.  Just like the eggs that children hunt for on Easter, they're hidden treats left for others to discover.

BUT, it’s not all fun and games.  Easter eggs are unofficial content.  So unless creators spill the beans, your only option for hunting Easter eggs is tireless trial-and-error… (!)

Easter Eggs & Spells

  • Alexa, Alohamora!
  • Alexa, Avada Kedavra! *
  • Alexa, Crucio! *
  • Alexa, Imperio! *
  • Alexa, Expelliarmus!
  • Alexa, Imperio!
  • Alexa, Lumos!
  • Alexa, Nox!
  • Alexa, Wingardium leviosa!

* The three Unforgivable Curses all give the same response from Alexa

Quotes & Questions

  • Alexa, after all this time?
  • Alexa, I solemnly swear I am up to no good
  • Alexa, which Hogwarts House do you belong to?
  • Alexa, what is a Patronus? **
  • Alexa, who is the Half-Blood Prince? **
  • Alexa, what is a Death Eater? **

** These are not traditional “Easter eggs” since Alexa does not know the answer herself. However, her answers (sourced from Wikipedia) were correct and impressively thorough, so I wanted to post them here anyway

Alexa Can Be A Harry Potter Snob...

If you're having trouble with any of these, note that Alexa can be picky about pronunciation.  At times, she won't reveal her hidden "Easter egg" response until you pronounce your spell correctly...

For example, when I tried the “Avada Kedavra!” curse on my Echo Show, Alexa correctly captured my command (and its spelling).  But, she didn’t reveal a Harry Potter-themed reply.

Only after I looked up the pronunciation and added a little “oomph!” did she reveal that she knew it was an Unforgivable Curse…

In short, make sure you know your stuff!
