Did you know that Alexa was inspired by the computer on the Starship Enterprise

…And that you can change Alexa’s name to Computer?

…And that she has a self-destruct code??

If you’re a Star Trek fan, Alexa clearly has a lot in store for you.

(And for Harry Potter fans and Star Wars fans too.)

Here’s what you’ll get in this guide :

  1.  Answers to the three most-Googled Star Trek-Alexa questions
  2.  21 Star Trek Easter Eggs
  3.  5 popular Star Trek Alexa skills

Let’s beam in

Alexa + Star Trek: The Basics

Jeff Bezos is a huge Trekkie.

So much so that Alexa was modeled on the Computer on the Starship Enterprise.

“Our vision was that, in the long term, [Alexa] would become like the Star Trek computer.”

Jeff Bezos (2016 Washington Post interview)

Before we get to the Easter eggs and Alexa skills that fellow Trekkies will love, let’s knock out the 3 most Googled-questions by users overall:

The Alexa self-destruct code is "Alexa, Code Zero Zero Zero Destruct Zero."  (The auto self-destruct code used by Captain Kirk.)

After you issue the command, Alexa will play a 10-second self-destruct countdown, ending with the sound of a ship explosion.

Note that this is just for entertainment purposes!  Your device won't be harmed in any way.

You can't change Alexa's voice, but you CAN change her "wake word".

The "wake word" is the word you use to get Alexa to start listening.  If you go into your device settings within the Alexa app, you can change the wake word to "Computer."

From now on, to make a request, start with "Computer" instead of "Alexa."

Yes!  Just say either of the below and she will show off her language skills.

  • Alexa, speak Klingon.
  • Alexa, can you speak Klingon?

The Top 5 Star Trek Alexa Skills

Easter eggs can be a fun novelty or party trick, but your interest in them will fizzle out soon.

Thankfully, there’s an even greater amount of Star Trek-themed content in the Alexa Skills Store.   (Skills are essentially “apps” for voice assistants).

We looked at every one of the 24 Star Trek Alexa skills, used user ratings/reviews to filter out the duds, and live testing to narrow the list down to five.

So without further ado, here they are:

1. Star Trek Quotes

This new skill is the first to offer quotes from Star Trek canon.

Upon activating the skill you can hear quotes from the Star Trek character, Spock.  And make sure to keep checking back, as the skill is often updated with new Spock quotes.

To get started, say:

  • Alexa, Star Trek quotes.
  • Alexa, launch Star Trek quotes.

Average Rating: 4.0
# of Ratings: 52

2. Star Trek Facts

Average Rating: 4.0
# of Ratings: 24

This skill is the second newest Star Trek skill in the Alexa Skills Store.

It first gives you the star date corresponding to today’s Earth date, followed by a short, 15-second Star Trek fact.

(Note: “Stardate” is a fictional time measurement system used in Star Trek.  Viewers often hear it at the beginning of a voice-over log entry; e.g., “Captain’s log, stardate 41153.7…”

To get started, say either:

  • Alexa, open Star Trek facts
  • Alexa, open Star Date

3. Auto-Destruct Sequence

After you issue the auto self-destruct code used by Captain Kirk, this skill will play a 10-second self-destruct countdown sound effect.

Note that there is currently no abort command programmed into the destruct sequence.

To start the skill, simply say:

  • Alexa, Code Zero Zero Zero Destruct Zero

Average Rating: 4.5
# of Ratings: 1,688

Note! This skill is just a prank and is for entertainment only.  It does not provide any real self-destruct functionality and your Alexa device will be just fine.

4. Photon Torpedoes

Average Rating: 4.5
# of Ratings: 1,927

This skill will fire off a few shots of the photon torpedoes blaster from the classic science fiction spaceship, the Star Trek Enterprise.

To get started, say:

  • Alexa, launch Photon Torpedoes.
  • Alexa, Photon Torpedoes.

5. Transporter

This skill will start a transporter sound like the one on the Star Trek Enterprise.

To get started, say:

  • Alexa, beam me up.

Average Rating: 4.0
# of Ratings: 1,560

Conclusion

We hope you enjoyed this guide to the funny and entertaining Star Trek content you can enjoy on your Alexa devices.  If you have any questions or suggestions, don’t hesitate to leave a comment or send us an email.
